a l’Orange

June 30, 2012

Q: What’s whiter than white but orange all over?

A: That would be my just-received and yet-unadorned fiberglass orange for entry in the Riverside Art Museum’s Fall fundraiser, OrangeAID. A smaller version of the giant citruses that RAM commissioned for its art alliance fundraiser in 2006 (click here), this one is slightly larger than a basketball. In 2006, we had just moved to Riverside, and I remember seeing that overgrown crop of civic symbols at businesses downtown. Varied in media and imagery, they riled my competitive spirit, prompting me to call to see if I could paint one, too … but it was too late. I never forgot missing my chance to have an art piece of mine on public display … So, a month ago when I heard about this new fundraiser I had to get in on it. Now, I’m one of the local artists who’ve been invited to decorate one of the more than 100 oranges that will be exhibited in October and eventually go to RAM sponsors and private collectors for the museum’s benefit. The big question is: how will I fill my orange blank? When I first got it I thought it was so small … but now its blankness seems to be getting bigger: What am I going to paint on it? I’ve had a few ideas but they always either seem either too much or not enough … I’m sure something will occur to me eventually, but until then I’ll keep staring at it. The completed orange is due October 1st, so I’ve got time: September 30th is a long way off …

As the others said, I can’t wait to see what you come up with…. Should be a very good thing to work on while recovering.. This is one of the sort of things that I’ve always been intriqued by but scared of trying. And it’s not procrastrinating, the creative brew isn’t quite brewed to the right point yet. The question is when yet is.
