Bewitched

August 14, 2011

I’ve been called lots of things, but never brujo. In Mexico, a brujo is a male sorcerer or witch … a man with special powers of sight and intuition. My first experience with a brujo was in utero: one touched my Mom’s stomach and told her she was carrying a child who would be talented and a professor; as a kid I couldn’t get enough of that story. Denise at A Growing Obsession blog referred to me as the Rancho’s brujo in a recent post, in a preface to a video trailer for a series photographer/videographer Mitchell Maher is producing on designers. It’s a toss-up who makes me look better, Denise with her flatteringly-worded description, or Mitch, with his talent for capturing the dream-like quality of my garden. Read Denise’s self-esteem boosting post here, and click to the jump to see the trailer …

You have restraint, essential to fine design. Also, you have a wonderful collection of plants and oddments (some of your castoffs now grace my house and garden). I’m delighted too to see someone else growing acacia pravissima — a favorite I put in my 4 gardens

I was pretty sure you’d understand how I intended the use of “brujo” as the utmost compliment, but still I was a little nervous you’d be somehow offended. Wonderful story of your first encounter with a brujo!

I loved it, Denise … you’ll see how much in the next post! As for the video, I hope when I finally make my appearance I look as good as you did in your carjack planter how-to …

Reuben, would you email me? I want to mention this post on my blog and send readers to you but I’d like to use the equivalent of a still from the video with my post. Something visual. Thanks.
