Who Knew?!
I woke up at 5am to the unexpected sound of rain. And, not a gentle shower either, but a heavy, relentless downpour. I admit to not having checked the weather report in recent days; I had no expectation that today would be any different from the cool morning-evening — hot in the middle — summer days we’ve had for weeks …
I love the sound of rain and enjoy walking in it, but couldn’t find an umbrella anywhere. So I decided to forego my usual walk and go back to bed … from there I could hear the downpour intensify further, punctuated by thunderous rumblings and sharp lightning blasts … lulled, I dozed off …
Waking later, I went outside to find everything thoroughly soaked. If only I’d had a clue, I wouldn’t have watered the night before. But, this was just a brief respite, and light sprinkles became a steady shower …
Now, post-lunch, the skies are still gray, but I’m thinking not for long … the rainy coolness is being replaced by a familiar humid prickliness. It’ll be hot again, as it has been for weeks …
I’m happy it rained this morning, it was lovely taste of the coming Fall’s cooler, wetter days.
I loved it, too. I spent all morning watching the lightning, counting the seconds ’til thunder, and kicking myself for not bringing in the patio furniture cushions the night before. Yay for not having to water for a few days!
Hola! … I was met by wet cushions, too … but the rain was such an unexpected pleasure!
Intensely jealous of your rain. Yesterday morning we kept discussing the interesting clouds, how tropical the sky looked, the increased humidity, probably about the time you were having the downpour. The Rancho in the rain sounds like a sublime place to be.
Rain time is my fave time in the garden, I must say … Everything’s just so, well, saturated … in every sense, especially color-wise. Someone on the train in was saying that she was in Pasadena and didn’t have any rain at all, either: weird how that happens!
I love the idea of summer rain. The weather just gets more and more interesting…
Summer rain in the morning … just perfection …
Reuben, It was a pleasure meeting you this weekend. Your front yard is wonderful and I can’t wait to see the back! I’ve always been a big proponent of LIVING in places (spaces) that transports one out of the drudgery of day to day life. You seem to have been successful at that.
Drew (the neighbor in the silver Prius)
P.S. Yes, that was a great storm.
Drew, thanks! If you’re not busy Sunday maybe I can give you the grand tour then. 😉
Three cheers for surprise summer storms!! I love thunderstorms! These were so strong over my house that not only were my windows rattling, my crystals in said windows were dancing. This is unusual in such storms. I was out in it and loving being drenched. Just couldn’t help myself. A good thing that all my chairs are metal. No coushions to worry about.
I can’t wait to meet all of your treasures, inside and out. Made sure to locate you when on a trip to the cemetery. Thought it would be a good idea in regards to be ablew to know where I’d be at for the sale. Am back to fighting with these plants and planters. I will prevail! They just like being difficult!
Hey, Vicki, I’m sure you will prevail, as you say, and in a big way! I loved the rain and was just in awe of this noisy, wet surprise on Sunday morning, although it sounds like you got an better show in your part of town.
BTW: I’ve found yet another rusty kindred spirit in my own neighborhood … will post on it a day or two… Next time you’re in my neck of the woods call me … you’ve got my number, right? If not, email me and I’ll share it with you: reubix@earthlink.net
See you soon
