Glamour Shot
A stand of opuntia cactus are having a major fashion moment in this image by Juergen Teller, from Marc Jacobs’ current ad campaign.
Used as an ironic backdrop to showcase designer Jacob’s soft, flowy, might-be-a-crazy lady duds, I can’t decide if the models are huddling together for warmth or just hanging out among the prickly pears until the Krispy Kremes arrive. In either case they don’t look too happy … Still, succulents as fashion? Makes sense to me: the colors, textures and often-extreme shapes are definitely inspirational. I can easily see a whole collection based on, say, echeverias. Fashion’s about beauty — not to mention change — both qualities found in even the most, er, garden variety succulents … It’s too late for Spring 2011, but I want agaves on the runway in 2012!
My goodness. Such awful expressions on their faces. In 30 years, they’ll be shooting models being tortured by serial killers.
I like the cactus, though!
Fashion torture?! It’s the shoes (Click here)
So much for that silky fabric when the photo shoot is over, as they pull away from the opuntias. Bit of a snag, I bet.
Maybe that’s why the sour pusses!
agaves on the runway in 2012!!! I’ll sign that petition!
It’s time!
All I can think of when I see that photo are the oodles of glochids they’re going to have to pull out with tweezers when they’re done. Sadly, I’m not sure it was worth it in this case. Beautiful Opuntias, though.
I love opuntias, too… they’re like sculptures made up of big quilted paddles
I like them because they always look friendly and sweet, but they’re totally not.

Noli me tangere!
Great photo: like an inquisitive bunny… With prickles
