Shapely silhouette

Returning to work this week, I haven’t had much time to take note of our amazing agave potatorum. Last night I got home in just enough time to take this picture of the top of the agave’s stalk silhouetted against the darkening sky … but, I was excited to see the branches, or panicles, promised by Buck Hemenway! How long has the stalk grown in the past week?

How about another foot? The agave’s stalk is 63-inches long! In the light of day the stalk is truly beautiful …

Budding spires

… and against a blue sky, its budding branches echo a nearby finial. Now, I’m looking forward to the branches getting bigger, longer and eventually flowering. Mid-week I removed the pups from the agave’s base and mailed them out to Loree of Danger Garden and Megan of Far Out Flora. Perfect little (dangerously spiky) versions of their mother, they’ll soon be in Portland, Oregon and San Francisco, respectively. I hope they’ll be happy in their new, much cooler, homes …

I can’t wait!!! I hope that my pup carries along it’s mothers predilection to bloom in a container. As much as I would hate for one of my agaves to die I still hope to someday have one of them bloom. Thank you so much for both the pup and for all of the bloom spike photos you are taking and sharing. It’s almost as good as being there!

I love that last photo, it looks like something from the top of an Antonio Gaudi building.

Our new baby arrived safe and sound! I haven’t decided where I want it to live permanently, so it’s hanging out in the succulent wagon. Your pictures of the spike are amazing. Thanks so much for the new pup!!!!
