Rustic surrealism

Because I hate throwing certain things away, I have to find some way to keep them and make them work in the Rancho’s garden. All the items in this tableau were destined for the dump: the hardened spill from a concrete project, half of a concrete urn that broke, random lengths of railroad ties, and the only salvageable part left from a hollow plaster monkey, its face — I couldn’t bear to see them go. Bringing them all together next to a stand of sinuous aloes, they seem to take on a surreal significance and I can justify keeping them for awhile longer.
